School Gardening &
Composting Workshops
For teachers, aides, and parent
volunteers. All school workshops are from 3:30-6:00
PM. $5 per person. You can pay at the workshop.
Please call or email ASAP to pre-register so I know how many people to
expect. If not enough people sign-up, the workshop will be

A new School
Gardening Workshop in Santa Ynez Valley has been added to this list.
The Carpinteria Workshop was
cancelled due to lack of
enrollment and will be rescheduled for next fall along with a School
Gardening Workshop in Lompoc. I have also listed
a free public Vegetable Garden
Workshop sponsored by La Sumida
Nursery and taught by Oscar Carmona from Healing Grounds Organic
Wholesale Nursery. Healing Grounds donates the seedlings for the
other workshops. No need to RSVP for the public workshop but
please RSVP for the School Gardening and Composting
Workshops.

workshops feature a school garden tour, a power point presentation
(School Gardens of Santa Barbara County), plus a question and answer
session.
Participants will learn:
How to start or enhance a school garden, non-toxic organic gardening
methods, designing a school garden as an outdoor classroom, where to
get supplies, what to plant when, gardening projects, gardening
curriculum, group management, and a monthly planting calendar for the
Santa Barbara area. Garden snacks will be provided.
Participates receive a Garden Detectives curriculum, free
seeds, organic plant starts and handouts.
The School Composting
Workshop focuses on composting food and garden waste in a school
setting. Learn the basics of
decomposition, different composting methods (worm bins, hot piles,
static piles, pocket composting, and mulching,) harvesting and using
compost, compost tea, sizing your system, compost collection, and
troubleshooting. Learn how Peabody Charter School composts food
scraps from the cafeteria kitchen, students' lunches and the
garden. Snacks from the garden will be provided.
Participates will receive a copy of Garden Detectives
curriculum, free seeds, organic plant starts and
handouts.
