SANTA BARBARA ORGANIC GARDEN CLUB PRESENTS FREE TALK ON “CHOOSING THE RIGHT FRUIT TREES FOR YOUR GARDEN!” SATURDAY, DEC 1, 10 am – 12 noon.

 

Just in time for bare root season (January and February), this class helps you choose the right variety for your South Coast garden.  Fruit trees have it all: beautiful spring flowers, delicious fruit, colorful fall leaves and a beautiful winter structure. So why plant a mere "ornamental" when you can enjoy a tree that gives you so much more in return for the water and care?

In the winter most deciduous fruit trees are sold as bare root trees. Buying fruit trees at this time is economical and easy. It is the best way to put in apples, pears, stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums etc.), figs, pomegranates, and nut trees.  The class will cover how to select the appropriate trees for Santa Barbara, and how to plant them.  You will learn all the characteristics of fruit trees so that you can select an appropriate tree for our climate and for your garden.  Winter chill requirements, tree size, and planting techniques will be discussed.

 

Larry Saltzman, co-founder of the Santa Barbara Organic Garden Club and a graduate of the Permaculture Design Course, will teach this class.  Larry and his wife Linda have a 1/3 acre backyard food forest with over 75 fruit trees and the class will be held in this unique Santa Barbara garden.

 

The Santa Barbara Organic Club had its first meeting on July 12, 2000 and presents local events and activities on topics of interest to gardeners weaning themselves from chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
