Dear Jill Frandsen,
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
is considering the adoption of new regulations for genetically
engineered organisms. They have released an extensive Environmental
Impact Statement describing the proposed changes that are being
considered. The proposed changes to the failing federal GE regulatory
system provide us with a unique and important opportunity to make our
voices heard.
One of the options under consideration is to ban the open-air
production of food and feed crops that produce pharmaceutical drugs and
industrial compounds. This is a policy that has been advocated by
mainstream food industry representatives such as the powerful Grocery
Manufacturers Association and many conventional agriculture
organizations.
However, USDA has made a preliminary
recommendation for a much
lower standard of protection that would allow food crops to be produced
outdoors, so it is important that they hear from us demanding that they
do better!
