Ecovillage Design is a new and innovative field of design that is
emerging to address our current environmental and social crisis in a
holistic, integrated and positive way, providing sustainable and
long-term solutions.
International ecological design teachers and consultants, Morag Gamble
and Evan Raymond, from Crystal Waters Permaculture Village, Australia
(winner of 1995 UN World Habitat Award) and Larry Santoyo, permaculture
teacher and designer of Earthflow Design Works, will be presenting a
two-day Ecovillage Design workshop in Santa Barbara on Saturday &
Sunday, Jan 18 & 19, 9am-5pm.
This workshop provides an opportunity to explore the integrated approach
of planning and designing ecologically sustainable human settlements and
presents an overview of the design principles used in successful projects
around the world.
Ecovillages are designed with ecology in mind and encourage people
who live in and visit them to develop an understanding of the
interconnectedness of the natural world- to create beneficial
relationships between the ecological, social, economic and spiritual
aspects of their lives. The aim is to engage people fully
with their head, heart and hands.
Many aspects of ecovillages will be explored during this workshop
including:
· What
is an ecovillage and what forms do they take
· Discussion
of the Global Ecovillage Network
· How
do you form an Ecovillage
· Permaculture
Design Techniques
· Healthy
non toxic houses and low impact
buildings
· Ecological
infrastructure & waste management
strategies
· Developing
a sense of community belonging
· How
to encourage developers, bank lenders, city and county
planners and make them aware
of growing public support
· Explore
new Microvillage Network concept
The workshop will include images and case studies of
international ecovillages, demonstrating the diversity of ways in which
ecovillage design principles can be applied to meet the needs of local
communities and environments.

CRYSTAL WATERS
PERMACULTURE VILLAGE,
AUSTRALIA
Crystal
Waters Village is a leading-edge centre for sustainable design and
ecological education. This village, established in 1989, is home to
200 permanent residents and abundant wildlife. It is one of the
first villages in the world designed using the principles of Permaculture
and offers guidance for the future planning and design of sustainable
human settlements - a key strategy for addressing the interconnected
problems we face in every part of the world today.
Crystal Waters received the United Nations World Habitat Award in 1995
for its “pioneering ways in demonstrating new low impact and
sustainable ways of living” and has been listed in the top 40 of the
UN Best Practices database.
International ecological design teachers and consultants, Morag Gamble
and Evan Raymond, will outline the reasons for its success and describe
the features that make Crystal Waters an ‘ecovillage’.
ABOUT THEM…
Morag and Evan have been living at Crystal Waters for the past three
years (although their connection to this place extends far beyond that).
Prior to moving to this rural village, they worked in urban areas
developing city farms, a National Network of community gardens and other
urban community-based sustainability projects.
They are two of the key environmental and community educators from
Crystal Waters offering programs for all ages and nationalities,
and recently co-founded the Crystal Waters College. The
extensive research they have undertaken within the community for a book
about the lives and work of people at Crystal Waters enables them to
share with you many of the fascinating personal stories and insights of
life in an ecovillage. They are directors of an ecological design
firm SEED, and work in partnership with the Global Ecovillage Network
Oceania/Asia Inc. Morag has also been a Director of the Crystal
Waters Co-operative for five years.
Larry Santoyo is an internationally recognized land use planner and Green
Business Consultant . He has taught courses at UC Berkeley and
CalPoly/San Luis Obispo. He has twenty years experience in resource
protection and natural systems management . He works with his wife
Kathryn Santoyo in their consulting business, Earthflow Design
Works,
in Los Osos CA.
