The base fee is $1200 and this includes all meals and lodging. There is a sliding scale fee starting at $1100 for those registering 30 days in advance. CLASS
1. Circle activity to demonstrate interdependence of the elements in
natural and cultivated ecosystems.
2. Define permaculture.
3. Discuss Mollisonian permaculture ethics.
4. Discuss and experience five basic Mollisonian permaculture principles.
This will include a slide show and hands-on activities: Broad pattern
observation and sheet mulch.
5. Discuss how this all pertains to our lives as individuals, households,
and communities, and where the participants want to go from here with their
"permaculture journeys".
PREREQUISITE: Read one chapter from any permaculture book. If you don't
have one, see the online summary of "Permaculture, A Beginner's Guide" at

LOCATION: In Alpine ... directions will be sent upon registration.
ENROLLMENT is limited to 25 and on a first-come/first-served basis.
THE INSTRUCTOR
Jane Higginson is a Permaculture designer, practitioner, and educator. She
was born and raised in San Diego County. Jane has designed and taught about
systems for sustainable living in Arizona, California, Texas, Mexico,
Guatemala, and Paraguay. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer and Trainer in
Latin America (Guatemala and Paraguay). Jane's formal education is in the
fields of Regional Planning and Wildlife Science. She was awarded a Diploma
of Permaculture Design from the Permaculture Institute of Australia,
primarily for her design efforts and facilitation of grass-roots
permaculture projects. She is now adjunct faculty in the Environmental
Studies Program at Prescott College, and Agricultural Aide for the
California Department of Food and Agriculture. She has one son who she is
teaching to walk lightly on the Earth.
ECPC
The East County Permaculture Circle was launched January 5 by a group of 15
East County residents. It is intended to be a study/do group that meets
once/month for classes, and in between at members' houses to help each other
with PC projects in "barn-raising" fashion. We are currently evaluating a
number of PC-learning options such as instructors/lecturers, Internet
(distance-learning) courses, videos, books, discussion groups, etc.

Feb 20  Wed. 7 pm "BIRDS AND ORGANIC GARDENING"
Santa Barbara Organic Garden Club's 
Community Environmental Council Gildea Center at 930 Miramonte Drive in Santa
Barbara.
The speaker will be Claudia Armann, a wildlife expert formerly with the Santa
Barbara Wildlife Care Network. The Moderator will be Organic Garden Club member
Mardena Waller. Armann and Waller believe that birds are organic gardeners'
natural allies - in fact, without birds, a gardener probably can't be
organic. Practical advice will be provided about how to attract birds so we
can "put them to work" to help rid our gardens of unwelcome pests. Among the
techniques to be discussed: providing birds' favorite food and shelter plants
(which also beautify the yard), creating water sources and protecting our
"working birds" from garden chemical poisons and predators like cats.
According to Armann, 40 million U.S. cats spend at least some time outdoors,
plus there are another 60 million feral cats. Scientists estimate that these
cats kill 1.5 billion birds a year.
The Santa Barbara Organic Club had its first meeting on July 12, 2000 and
presents monthly local events and activities on topics of interest to
gardeners weaning themselves from chemical pesticides, herbicides and
fertilizers.

This is a repeat of our very popular
introduction to Permaculture class held in December. Take this class
for the first time or repeat it, as different topics will be
emphasized this time around. Come find new ways to look at your
garden, home, and community. Permaculture (permanent culture +
agriculture) is a design intensive system for ecological living. In
this introductory class, we'll go over some fundamentals for creating
sustainable human environments: relative location, elements,
functions, zone planning, energy cycling, plant stacking, &
accelerating succession. We'll also cover plant guilds, sheet
mulching, closed loop composting, plant propagation, natives,
gardening for bugs and other wildlife. This class will be taught by
Christopher Shein. Christopher is a founding member of BASIL (Bay
Area Seed Interchange Library), SPACE (Supporting Permanent
Agriculture in Cities Everywhere) and runs WILDHEART GARDENS, an
edible, native, medicinal and other useful plant permaculture
nursery, design and landscaping business in Oakland. He is teaching a
nine week course at Merritt College this Spring Semester '02.

Saturday, March 2, 2002,HANDS-ON RAINWATER HARVESTING,  Tucson, AZ
Learning how to use rainfall and stormwater runoff helps you save groundwater, reduce your overall water needs, reduce erosion, and make your plants happy, all at the same time. This hands-on workshop will show you how to lay out and build microbasins, swales, French drains and small gabions. Principles of reading and assessing a landscape's water flow, basic water harvesting strategies, working with gravity and land contours, mulching, and plant selection will be covered. A steel culvert cistern will be constructed to capture rooftop runoff. You will help lay out the plumbing, create the base of the tank, place a steel culvert cistern into place, and hook up the cistern to the roof downspout. We will cover runoff calculations, tank size, optimum tank placement, water quality, safety issues, other types of tank systems, and mosquito prevention. A resource handout will be provided. Be ready for the rainy season! This is a hands-on workshop so come prepared to get dirty, and bring gloves, hat, water bottle, and sack lunch. information. Cost: $125.

The CRMPI Annual Permaculture Design Course (APDC) is designed to give the participant an understanding of the essential parts of permaculture so that they can better design and engineer forest gardens, greenhouses, and other permaculture endeavors. During the first week you will learn about the essential elements of permacutlure. Then in the second week you will be putting the knowledge in action with a full spectrum design project. Whether you're a designer, a veteran Permaculturist, or a gardener CRMPI's APDC has something to offer due to it's wide variety of material.
The curriculum includes a variety of classes and workshops essential to the development of becoming a permaculturist. Everything from the invisible structures of our economy and social structures, to the structures of the soil and how that can be used or modified to create a better planting bed.

Location - The course is held at our high altitude demonstration site, one of the most mature forest gardens in North America. All ideas covered in the Course can be wittnessed on site with a stroll through the garden. It helps create immediate learning connections when everything learned can be seen working in action.

YEAR 2002 HERBACULTURE WORK/STUDY PROGRAM
Herb Pharm is proud to offer our HerbaCulture Work/Study Program on our certified organic herb farm nestled in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon.
The program runs from March 25th through July 19th. Approximately 30 hours per week (Monday through Friday) are spent working and learning farming techniques in fields, greenhouses, educational display garden, landscapes and barn areas, and 10-12 hours per week are in the classroom. Work involves participation in the cultivation and harvest of the over 85 medicinal herb crops grown on our farm. Students also assist in the maintenance of our 1.5 acre Herbal Education Garden and other landscaped areas. The work is hard and physical, often repetitive, and the weather can be cold and wet, or very hot. It is essential that applicants be in good physical condition and mentally prepared for hard work.
Classroom training involves many aspects of organic farming and herbalism. Topics include: organic farming techniques, permaculture, plant identification, plant spirit medicine and the cultivation, harvesting and therapeutic uses of medicinal herbs. Occasional overnight trips are scheduled, including a seaweed harvesting foray. There will also be local farm tours, and wild herb identification walks.
Teachers include: herbalists "Herbal Ed" Smith, Deborah Frances, N.D., Richo Cech, Sara Katz, Christopher Hobbs, David Bunting, James Jungwirth, and Thorin Halvorson; permaculture consultants Randy Carey and Tom Ward; as well as local farmers and other guest herbalists.
There is no monetary fee for this program. We provide communal housing with shared rooms in a large modern house on the farm. Participants will be responsible for their own food, consumable household items, transportation and maintenance of our guesthouse. There is no space for pets or children.

Announcing the Opening of The Permaculture Credit Union
The Permaculture Credit Union is a reality. A new kind of environmentally responsive financial institution has been created and chartered. It is possibly the first credit union founded upon the Earth Care principles of Permaculture ethics, namely respect for natural systems, respect for people, and no waste ( which in banking will mean the reinvestment and recycling of surplus back into the community being served). Our mission is to pool the financial resources of people who subscribe to these ethical principles and provide a financial vehicle that will allow these resources to be put to work creating a sound sustainable, environmentally responsible future. We believe we have targeted a market that is severely unserved by existing financial institutions- those people who are committed to a cleaner environment, healthy food and water, sustainable energy use, and a more conscious lifestyle. It will create the opportunity for members to control the use of money in the community and contribute to the revitalization of local well-being.
        The PCU is now close to 200 with $1,2000,00 in share and term and needs to grow to more in order to offer more services to the Permaculture Community. We are also looking funds from individuals or foundations to help with the costs of running the office as we grow.

Online Course Expanded March 15 2002
Elfin Permaculture has added another 6-month segment to its online course to
accommodate more students and to reduce the time one must wait for a new
course cycle to begin. Willem Smuts of South Africa will lead a course March
15 to Sept. 15, 2002. Dan Hemenway, course founder and designer, will lead
the course beginning Sept. 15, 2002. He will also review and critique all
designs from the earlier course and pass on ultimate certification of
students.
The new session has been developed because the course was reaching the limit
for the number of certificate students that it can process. Now students
from each session will see designs done by students in the previous session.
Seeing student designs and the instructor's review early in the course cycle
helps guide students in their own design projects, a major component of the
online course.
Dan Hemenway taught permaculture design for more than 20 years. He was
recognized in the first round of Community Service Awards from the In
ternational Permaculture Institute and has received 5 advanced
diplomas from the institute. Dr.Willem Smuts, a geologist with
specialization in sedimentology, has participated in all 6 of the annual
online courses given this year. He will use the standard posts developed for
these courses and will guide discussion, reports, and design work by each
student in the supplemental course. Students in each course will meet the
same rigorous standards that are the hallmark of Elfin Permaculture
certification.

Permaculture at Happy Valley continues to thrive!
The Happy Valley Foundation has been awarded a $6,000 grant for environmental projects by the Star Fund of the Tides Foundation, on the recommendation of Angela and Anthony Ocone. These funds will provide support for the school's Permaculture program and help its outreach to other educational centers through July 2002.

What I'm getting from these thoughtful contributions is that much of the
difficulty in defining or finding a context for permaculture comes from the
facts that:
1) permaculture is a comprehensive design tool, not a study of a subject,
and
2) permaculture emphasizes processes rather than objects (unfortunate that
the word "permaculture" makes it sound like a thing, not a process.
So: 1) means that permaculture searches for general principles of design.
It's not limited to the design of a particular class of entity the way
architecture or engineering is (though there are some pretty philosophical
works on architectural design theory that leak into other fields [e.g.
Moholy-Nagy, Chris Alexander]). Permaculture's ideas aim to be useful for
creating human habitats as well as understanding how natural ones are
designed/have evolved. Thus the problem permaculture attempts to solve could
be described as "how are sustainable systems designed?" Since nearly
everything humans do could be described as some kind of design, Pc is going
to "leak" into a lot of fields.
But about the idea of Pc leaking into other fields: I realize I wouldn't
describe it that way. I'm coming to the conclusion (a la Holmgren) that
permaculture isn't a field. It doesn't lie on the same plane as biology,
physics, or even architecture or economics. It doesn't fill up an empty
space between other disciplines (the way paleontology fills up a gap between
biology and geology).

Nearly every idea in permaculture can be found in an existing discipline:
ecology, agronomy, anthropology, economics, etc. So it doesn't lie "between"
or with these fields. But what _can't_ be found in other disciplines are the
patterns permaculture uses to connect the various pieces of knowledge from
these disciplines. Thus permaculture doesn't "leak" into other disciplines,
but rather organizes them; it gives you patterns with which to use available
knowledge to design or comprehend sustainable systems (human or nature's).
So perhaps Pc operates at a "higher" level (a more inclusive holon) than the
various disciplines. It tries to solve the problem of a lack of connection
among, and poor application of, various fields of knowledge. It shows
relationships among fields of knowledge.
Point #2) means that English and most western languages can't describe
permaculture very well, being so noun-oriented. Ecologists have had a
similar struggle, for example where biotic ecologists, who are
thing-oriented, describe a tree as leaves, trunk, and roots, planted in
soil, while functional ecologists, who think in terms of processes, say
you're looking at energy capture (leaves) and nutrient retention (all the
rest). Then they argue about who's right.

Part of Mollison's genius is that he's given us a way to combine objects and
processes through patterns. A synthesis like that will take a while for both
camps to digest. And it's too bad Bill and David made up a hard-to-grasp
noun, one that doesn't describe a process, instead of a term whose
definition begins to be included in the word itself [like "ecological
design" or "holistic management"]. This has compounded the language and
comprehension problem.
If permaculture is a way to organize large bodies of knowledge into a useful
system, it's a pretty grand thing indeed.
