Court Strikes Down Strict State Oil Tanker Standards
WASHINGTON, DC, March 7, 2000 (ENS) -
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that states may not set
safety and environmental standards for oil tankers that conflict with or
supplement federal regulations. The court said the need for uniform
federal regulations outweighs the states’ interest in protecting their
shores from oil spills.

Wetlands
Win Reprieve from Development Under New Rules

WASHINGTON, DC, March 7, 2000 (ENS) - New rules released
Monday will drastically curtail the development of small wetlands across
the United States. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced major
revisions to its nationwide permit program designed to protect thousands
of acres of wetlands by making it far more difficult to build anything
near streams and marshes.

Rules Prepare Organic Foods for Mainstream Market
WASHINGTON, DC, March 7, 2000 (ENS) -
Eating "organic" could take on additional meaning if new
regulations announced today take effect. The rules, proposed by
Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, would set uniform and consistent
national standards for organic meat, poultry, produce and processed
foods.

Two South African Parks Expand
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, March 6, 2000 (ENS) - Two South African National Parks have increased in size following the signing over land from provincial authorities to the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Mohammed Valli Moosa announced today. The world renowned Mapungubwe and K-2 archaeological sites of an Iron Age civilization will be part of the Vhembe/Dongola National Park. Full Story
Julia Butterfly Hassled Onstage

EUGENE, Oregon, March 6, 2000 (ENS) - Julia Butterfly Hill, who has become the world's best known tree-sitter for her two year vigil high atop a California redwood, was verbally attacked Saturday night onstage during her keynote address to a conference of lawyers and activists. She was describing her ordeal, the longest tree-sit in history, when a woman charged the stage scolding Hill for giving money to Pacific Lumber Company to keep the tree from being logged. Full Story
Sustainable Fisheries Scheme Sets Sail
LONDON, UK, March 6, 2000 (ENS) - The use of certification to promote the sustainable use of natural resources advanced Friday with the award in London of the first two labels by the Marine Stewardship Council. Designed for use on packaging and on restaurant menus, award of the MSC label requires verification by an independent, third-party auditor, as with the other global certification scheme backed by WWF, the Forest Stewardship Council.
