Garden Manager & Teacher Job Description
The Garden Manager & Teacher oversees all aspects of the organic edible garden at We Can. S/he designs and conducts a weekly garden class, currently scheduled every Wednesday from 3 - 6 pm. S/he facilitates lesson planning and garden participation, guides staff in the development and maintenance of a productive and educational garden. Garden Manager & Teacher reports both to Garden Coordinator and Executive Director.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Teaching
- Design & conduct weekly garden classes
- Guides students in general maintenance of the garden with specific focus on compost, harvest, propagation, and cultivation
- Mentor individual students in and out of class, model respect and curiosity for learning, and encourage students’ interests and talents.
- Design and conduct lessons for volunteers and adults participating in the program
- Oversees planning and installations of new gardens
Lesson Development & Documentation
- Collaborate with WE CAN garden staff in the development if garden lessons that are integrated with classroom teaching and standards
- Collaborate with the WE CAN Executive Director in the documentation of all lessons
- Oversee all the documentation of garden maps, harvest totals and garden history, and tracking baseline measures for evaluation purposes
Garden
- Manage gardens at a level of production that ensures ample produce to the kitchen, for the culinary classes, neighborhood giveaways, and special events
- Manage propagation, soil fertility, composting, crop rotation, garden planning, pruning, irrigation, pest and disease management, and animal husbandry
- Manage maintenance of garden facilities and equipment - tools, chicken coop, irrigation system, and hand tools
- Attend periodic staff meetings to identify and prioritize garden work, class preparation and other relevant tasks
- Ensure the maintenance of the WE CAN seed library, includes requesting donations
- Collaborate with staff on garden development and long-term garden projects
- Oversee the planning and development of propagating and growing plants for plant give-aways
- Oversee materials and seed ordering, soliciting seed, plant, and material donations
- Work independently to maintain the garden outside of scheduled class session
Communication, Outreach, & Grant Writing
- Participate in WE CAN staff meetings and professional development
- Maintain healthy relationships with WE CAN staff, students, parents, neighbors, kitchen educators, volunteers, and affiliates
- Maintain an awareness and actively participate in WE CAN events, work parties, potluck events, and relevant community events
- Schedule and facilitate meetings with the director regarding curriculum and lesson planning
- Communicate weekly class notes and plans to Garden Coordinator and Director
- Organize periodic work parties for implementing new gardens
- Contribute regularly to social media forums promoting events, activities and class happenings
- Represent WE CAN to the wider community ie. public speaking engagements, conferences, and scheduled events
Management
- Provide consistent, positive leadership - train and supervise garden staff and volunteers in conjunction with WE CAN Director
- Oversee volunteer solicitations and management
- Ensure an engaging and rewarding experience for garden staff and volunteers work in the garden
- Work closely with WE CAN Director in the development of an annual work plan
Skills Required
- Demonstrated ability to engage and work with youth from South LA or similar neighborhoods
- 2 years hands on garden experience or urban agriculture or related fields
- 2 years teaching experience, related field is preferred but not necessary
This position will be compensated at $12 - $18 per hr. for approximately
66 - 44 hrs. per month.
This position is funded through FFY 2014 (Sep 31, 2014).
