Island Gardening: Adapting Chinampas to the Urban Backyard
Want a self-sustaining urban food garden that needs no watering and no fertilizing? Yes it's possible! Join us for a hands-on workshop in building a modern version of a traditional gardening technology which sustained pre-Columbian Mexico City. Chinampas are raised garden beds that are partially submerged and completely surrounded by ecologically rich water, originally they were built in the shallow banks of a lake. We'll be adapting this system to the backyard scale specifically for busy dry climate urbanites.
There will be a potluck lunch so please make a fun dish and bring utensils!
Schedule:
9am-10am Tea, snacks, introductions
10am-10:30am Presentation on Chinampas, the most productive farming system ever designed in the
history of the world!
10:30am-12:00pm Assembly of a 13x5 foot system of island garden beds
12:00-1:00pm Potluck lunch
1:00-3:00pm Planting the beds and pond
$5-10 Sliding scale donation
