We joyfully announce the first ever Compost Immersion Program to begin
in Los Angeles, and you are cordially invited to attend. The
Extraordinary Master Composter, Alane Weber, will be teaching this five
day course!
Alane Weber teaches the compost portion of soil foodweb courses with
Elaine Ingham, Chief Scientist at Rodale Institute, and Alane is also
the Soils / Compost Instructor for the Master Gardener Program for San
Francisco and San Mateo Counties.
The following schedule
will be immersed into your consciousness and blended into your core soul
and ultimately......into your SOIL!:
Day 1: Overview, Tools & Materials, Management Decisions
Variations of styles & methods.
Focus: Aerobic composting methods and soil foodweb principles.
High Grade Biological Innoculum
Management decisions leading to appropriate method.
Build a pile demo; Turn a pile.
Compost materials: Details of Browns & Greens & High Nitrogen sources.
Post class discussion, Q & A till 5 p.m.
Day 2: Focus Aerobic Composting Management
Management Decisions & Aerobic Focus.
Expansion of C:N ratios.
Expand Aerobic composting, “Further Process”.
Build a high Nitrogen pile; Turn a pile.
Discuss Aerobic processes, Q & A specific to Hi N, heat & microbe management.
Post Class discussion, Q & A till 5 p.m.
Day 3: Alternate Methods of Compost Management
Alternative Composting processes, in depth: Static, Passive, Pit, Hybrid.
Demonstrate alternate pile building & turn a pile (if needed).
Wrap up alternative compost processes to finished product.
Post class discussion, Q & A till 5 p.m.
Day 4: In Depth Soil Foodweb Study
Soil FoodWeb powerpoint (This is what’s in good finished compost).
Soil FoodWeb powerpoint / Compost Tea Overview.
Demonstrate Compost Extract production.
Turn a pile (if needed).
Live microbe projection and discussion.
Post class discussion, Q & A till 5 p.m.
DAY 5: Vermicomposting / Worm Composting
Overview of Vermicomposting methods, styles, and equipment.
Build a sample bin, stacking and single chambers.
Harvesting worm castings.
Wrap Up: Q & A
Walk through of piles worked in demo area – where are they now?
What do they need from here?
Graduates will receive a Certificate in the
COMPOST IMMERSION PROGRAM.

In Session: 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.
Break: 10:30 - 10:45 a.m.
In Session: 10:45 – 12:30 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
In Session: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
Break: 3:00 - 3:15 p.m.
In Session: 3:15 – 4:30 p.m.
Add'l Q & A: 4:30 - 5:00 p.m. (if needed)
This Fabulous Rare Course will be offered for $375 for the full 5 days
and will be fully catered with vegan options. The event will be held at
the Star Education building next to the Eco Station and across from
what will be the new Hub Community Garden created by Star Education and
the Los Angeles Community. We will be creating and contributing to
their composting area to get the new two acre community garden off to a
great start.
