Sad thing to lose so many trees. They could use some help.

"There is one, and only one, solution, and we have almost no time to try it. We must turn all our resources to repairing the natural world, and train all our young people to help. They want to.
We need to give them this last chance to create forests, soils, clean waters, clean energies, secure communities, stable regions, and to know how to do it from hands-on experience"
"...the greatest change we need to make is from consumption to production, even if on a small scale, in our own gardens. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone.
Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce
words and bullets, not food and shelter."

Dear Members and Friends,
In the aftermath of the December 1st windstorm, we express our deep thanks for the tremendous outpouring of support and concern we have received from our members and friends. Many of you have inquired about the extent of damage and our progress in reopening the Arboretum. I send along this update as well as important opportunities to assist the Arboretum in its recovery efforts.

Sadly, our site was among those hardest hit by the worst windstorm in decades: 326 trees were lost and more than 700 specimens are in need of restorative pruning. To make sure the garden is safe for visitors, the Arboretum is presently closed. Today, over 150 workers from multiple public agencies, as well as dedicated Arboretum staff and volunteers, help clear debris. Though a rough estimate, we hope to reopen on December 31st. The Gift Shop, Arboretum Library and Peacock Cafe remain open during their normal hours. Classes held indoors (not on the grounds) are proceeding as scheduled, but please call the Education Office at 626.821.4623 to confirm.
At this time of tremendous loss, we look to the future and will soon begin planting the next generation of Arboretum trees and other plants. Indeed, the single largest planting campaign in our history is needed to restore the garden. It will be a careful, well-planned effort to ensure a magnificent Arboretum for years to come. We invite the entire community to participate by making a gift to the Arboretum Tree Fund.
I thank you for being part of this great Arboretum community.
Richard Schulhof, CEO
