Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an invasive riparian plant which is infiltrating slow moving waters in river deltas, lakes and canals in California and the west. While the plant is a biological filter it also provides habitat for mosquito larvae. If the goal is to protect native species then I would recommend not using this plant or promoting its spread.

Our water hyacinth is crowding out our water lilies

We have about 15 extra small plants they make purple flowers , roots act as filter
