We've now had the chance to decompress from COP15 and the holiday season and are looking ahead to new ventures. We're working on providing a number of workshops for our annual convergence with the Hollywood Fringe here in Southern California. We're already talking about COP16 n Mexico City. The Winter Quarterly, expanded (and a little delayed because of it) is just about out the door. It's a very exciting time for the CSPA! Ian Garrett & Miranda Wright |
Memembership is our primary source of support and we thank all of our members for helping make the CSPA a reality! We're restructuring our membership to accomodate an online store, so stay tuned for new benefits on reading materials and supplies! |

FEATURED ARTIST: DIANNA COHEN Los Angeles-based multi-media visual artist, painter and curator Dianna Cohen is best known for her two-dimensional and three-dimensional works using recycled plastic bags – sewn together – ranging from small hanging pieces to room-sized installations. Cohen’s work has been applied to surfboards in the acclaimed group show FLOW – fine lines on water, which she also curated. In 2007, Cohen expanded into making wearable art pieces using recycled materials, including stage outfits for alt-rock duo The Ditty Bops and a “green carpet” dress for actress Rachelle Carson. Her “conscious couture” and art were featured on Ed Begley’s environmentally themed HGTV series Living With Ed and on the CBS EcoZone Project with Daisy Fuentes. |

FALLEN FRUIT PRESENTS: EAT LACMA Fusing the richness of LACMA’s permanent collection with the ephemerality of food and the natural growth cycle, EAT LACMA’s projects consider food as a common ground that explores the social role of art and ritual in community and human relationships. EAT LACMA unfolds seasonally, with artist’s gardens planted and harvested on the museum campus, hands-on public events, and a concurrent exhibition, Fallen Fruit Presents The Fruit of LACMA (June 27-November 7, 2010). It culminates in a day-long event (November 7, 2010) in which over fifty artists and collectives will activate, intervene, and re-imagine the entire museum’s campus and galleries. EAT LACMA is curated by Fallen Fruit—David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young—and LACMA curator Michele Urton. |

IS JOY A SUSTAINABLE FUEL? By Moe Beitiks as published in the CSPA Quarterly/Fall 2009 When you see a big painted bus driving down the highway (a BIG bus, an old school bus, not some passenger van) that says RUNS ON VEGETABLE OIL; when that bus is covered in a thousand brushstrokes of color; is filled with young folk who may or may not have dreadlocks, may or may not play drums, and may or may not flash you a peace sign, what do you do? Do you roll your eyes? Do you smile? Is the joy that seems to sustain them for real? Can it last? Or is it the glory of youth and naïveté? |

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR SPECIAL ISSUE ON CULTURE AND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES In the face of growing environmental and economic urgencies, issues of sustainability and resiliency are moving to the forefront of planning, policy, and programs in cities and communities of all sizes. City planning paradigms are mutating from a focus on building ‘creative cities’ to that of achieving ‘sustainable cities.’ Internationally, this shift is evident among local governments adopting sustainability goals for towns, cities, and regions; creating sustainable community plans; and implementing community projects related to ‘sustainable development.’ Yet cultural considerations, while recognized in urban and community planning contexts, are not integrated into sustainability planning in a widespread way. Potential contributors are invited to submit an article by 1 May 2010 to Nancy Duxbury. |
