Los Angeles Permaculture Guild Newsletter                                   September 2008

Greetings Permaculture Friends...

This month has been a whirlwind ( literally! ) of actions and events. We just returned from Louisiana ( the other LA! ) where Hurricane Gustav and the National Guard arrived with flooding, power outages, mandatory evacuations and curfews in place -all marking the anniversary of Katrina -and delayed this newsletter to you...

We did witness the continued work of many organizations -including some from Los Angeles- to help those communities recover from Katrina -and managed to experience the goodwill and good cheer of the resilient people of New Orleans... a true lesson in working together as a community -that we can learn from -in our own LA...

See you at the Santa Monica Permaculture Festival !

For the (r)evolution,

Larry in LA.

PS. As always, your input to this newsletter is appreciated! -please submit your items and ideas -include your related "needs and wants", any surpluses for sale or trade -as well as events, articles, photos and announcements...

Of course, feel free to re-post this newsletter in part or in its entirety wherever appropriate -you can also click at the bottom to forward this issue to a friend.

REPORT

Southern California Permaculture Convergence -From Joan Stevens
Quail Springs hosted an amazing first ever Southern California Permaculture Convergence in grand style.  The site was limited to 50 people and the gathering was intimate and personal.  A design course with Geoff Lawton preceded the convergence so there was  great mojo, excitement, and students still around from that. We heard from many well known teachers and had short spotlights from people about local projects.

One of the highlights of the weekend was an open panel with Art Ludwig, Brad Lancaster, Bill Roley, and Gabriele Howearth.  Participants got a healthy dose of the history of permaculture in Southern California and beyond.  Ed Mendoza gave a talk about his work with indigenous groups and his perspective on women and water that was very moving. There were opportunities to meet up with people involved in projects all around the area and to enjoy the pond, gardens, livestock and other amenities of the site.

The idea of having membership dues for a regional guild was discussed but no motions were made.  There was much discussion about having a retreat/training weekend for women. Plans are in the works!  David Kahn
and myself (Joan Stevens) took on organizing the next convergence. Camille Cimino, Bill Roley, and Tom Nead volunteered to be on the planning committee. William Faith was selected to serve as a regional representative to explore a national permaculture presence. Thanks to all the amazing teachers who were there, Quail Springs for being such gracious hosts, and Wes and Margie for organizing the event!
