| A few nights ago the Montreal Permaculture Guild (montrealpermaculture.org) kicked off the Montreal Urban Sustainability Education, or MUSE course. The course is a year long and covers everything from designing urban space to greywater systems and seed-saving, as well as discussions and applications of the social side of permaculture. It includes a summer practicuum where participants will be given the opportunity to implement some of the theory that's shared over the winter and spring months. But the most exciting part of this course is that it is bringing together an entire community of people intent on actively caring for the earth and for each other!
A new program is being set up in England by which children from underserved households will be given access to free instruments and classical music training. The program is an echo of the Venezuelan project, "El Sistema", which focused on providing musical training to children from some of the poorest slums in Venezuela as an alternative to violence and drug involvement. In Venezuela the program was a huge success, resulting in the creation of the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, as well as multiple other small music groups and bands. The accessibility of music is said to have been a major factor in transforming the social fabric of the country. It's hoped that such will be the case in England as well
Moon Pads are one of many local businesses which provide homemade and reusable patterned flannel menstrual pads, replacing white plastic trash-to-be ones. They are guaranteed to last at least 5 years, making them much cheaper than disposables, as well as more sustainable. These cloth pads are comfortable and absorbent, and healthier than disposable ones.

A post on EcoSpace.cc a few days back on the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (also known as the Doomsday Seed Vault) generated some feedback about allowing seeds of Genetically Modified Organisms to be collected for storage in case of disaster. The topic of GMO crops is certainly a hotly debated one.
