Design and Build an Earthen Bread Oven -Sat. May 25th
Learn the ancient art of building with mud. Earthen ovens have
been used for thousands of years. Creative and playful designs for
benches, BBQ and outdoor ovens are easy to build. Join us as we
"play in the mud" and learn to design and build a real working
bread and pizza oven. "Cobb", "light clay" , earthen
plaster and other construction techniques for walls and buildings will
also be discussed and demonstrated.
Sand Bag and Straw Bale Construction -Sat. June 22nd
Learn the easiest of all alternative building techniques as we
construct a root and wine cellar. Domes, vaults, curved and standard
walls can also be built. Sand bags or straw bales can be stacked and
plastered to make elegant and affordable walls and buildings. Current
popularity of straw bale construction is actually a revival of a hundred
year old American technique!
Sand bags are also rapidly becoming popular as a building material. The
city of Hesperia in Southern California has commissioned the construction
of their public library using this technique. NASA has even tested this
as an easy and economical method for building on the moon!
