What is Permaculture/ Sustainability?

        
In a nutshell....Permaculture is both a philosophy and an interdisciplinary
design system to create sustainable ecosystems which support human needs in
a way that treads lightly on the earth and which respects, conserves and
regenerates natural ecosystems. The principles of permaculture are based on
ecology and can be applied to all climates and environments from the city
to the wilderness, from the backyard to the bioregion. Permaculture is
dancing with nature where nature leads the dance.

The newly-formed East County Permaculture Circle (ECPC) of San Diego
The East County Permaculture Circle was launched January 5 by a group of 15
East County residents. It is intended to be a study/do group that meets
once/month for classes, and in between at members' houses to help each other
with PC projects in "barn-raising" fashion. We are currently evaluating a
number of PC-learning options such as instructors/lecturers, Internet
(distance-learning) courses, videos, books, discussion groups, etc.

Looking for hands-on experience? Each month artist James Hubbell & permaculturist Bill Roley gather volunteers to work at

Course instructors:
Bruce Hill has extensive experience designing and installing pond and
aquaculture systems and has pioneered graywater and blackwater systems in
Mexico. In Illinois he worked with Homer Buck developing experimental fish
polyculture systems. Currently Bruce stewards an eight acre farm with several
fish ponds and a diverse food forest on the island of Maui.
He has taught permaculture courses around the world.

Dr. Bill Roley, Director of the Permaculture Institute of Southern
California, has taught design courses for the past 20 years. As faculty at
CalPoly Pomona and Saddleback College, he has established innovative
university level ecological training programs. Dr. Roley is a hands-on
educator, so be prepared to make stuff work at the course. He will emphasize
the fundamentals of permaculture design and regenerative strategies for
maximizing water capture and use in the home.

Tom Baldwin, our site host, is an experienced horticulturist and permaculture
designer. He will share his on-site design strategies for his home and other
structures.

Eric Werbalowsky will assist the lead instructors to facilitate our course
flow. He has taught at several design courses and more than a hundred compost
and permaculture workshops. He is a compost evangelist and green business
development consultant.

June 19- 25, 2002 Advanced Permaculture Teacher Training Course Bonny Doon, near Santa Cruz CA

With this Summer course, on the central California coast, we are continuing
to prepare a new generation of permaculture instructors for these new times.
We will provide a forum to develop teaching skills, discuss strategies and
techniques, and review the rewards and challenges of teaching a Permaculture
Design Course. A whole systems approach will be demonstrated throughout the
course. Everyone will gain experience and confidence through practice
teaching and supportive critique.
Tuition for the course is $230 if you register before May 19 and will be
$305 thereafter. This includes instruction and course materials. An
additional fee for food and camping will be announced for out-of-towners.
This course is limited to 25 people. The price has been kept very low to
facilitate attendance and encourage community.

June 22nd Sat  Sand Bag and Straw Bale Construction

Learn the easiest of all alternative building techniques as we construct a root and wine cellar. Domes, vaults, curved and standard walls can also be built. Sand bags or straw bales can be stacked and plastered to make elegant and affordable walls and buildings. Current popularity of straw bale construction is actually a revival of a hundred year old American technique!

Sand bags are also rapidly becoming popular as a building material. The city of Hesperia in Southern California has commissioned the construction of their public library using this technique. NASA has even tested this as an easy and economical method for building on the moon!

Course overview:
The CRMPI Annual Permaculture Design Course (APDC) is designed to give the participant an understanding of the essential parts of permaculture so that they can better design and engineer forest gardens, greenhouses, and other permaculture endeavors. During the first week you will learn about the essential elements of permacutlure. Then in the second week you will be putting the knowledge in action with a full spectrum design project. Whether you're a designer, a veteran Permaculturist, or a gardener CRMPI's APDC has something to offer due to it's wide variety of material.
The curriculum includes a variety of classes and workshops essential to the development of becoming a permaculturist. Everything from the invisible structures of our economy and social structures, to the structures of the soil and how that can be used or modified to create a better planting bed.

Location - The course is held at our high altitude demonstration site, one of the most mature forest gardens in North America. It is located on Basalt Mountain, surrounded by ridgelines covered with forests and red sandstone. This site makes a beautiful and inspiring location for teaching and learning. All ideas covered in the Course can be wittnessed on site with a stroll through the garden. It helps create immediate learning connections when everything learned can be seen working in action.

Permaculture Film Series planned Sites Needed
I am embarking on an ambitious video series about sustainable communities and permaculture systems. I would be interesting in hearing from anyone (particularly in Southern California -- but I would be willing to travel to very special and unique projects elsewhere) who currently has a complete permaculture system, passive solar house, earth sheltered building, straw bale home, innovative water catchment systems, food forests, or any other system that demonstrate aspects of sustainable living. I am also seeking individuals who are planning any type of such systems and about to begin the design phase. Designers, teachers, and other experts in the above field are also needed to lend their expertise to the program.

Participants would be expected to appear on camera to explain their system and take our small video crew on a tour of it and each one will get a finished copy of the video.

Designers, teachers, and technical experts who are interested in participating in the development of this project are invited to also get in touch and become involved. Those who lend a significant amount of time to the project will be granted licensing rights to the completed series depending on their level of involvement.

The Permaculture Credit Union is a reality. A new kind of environmentally responsive financial institution has been created and chartered. It is possibly the first credit union founded upon the Earth Care principles of Permaculture ethics, namely respect for natural systems, respect for people, and no waste ( which in banking will mean the reinvestment and recycling of surplus back into the community being served). Our mission is to pool the financial resources of people who subscribe to these ethical principles and provide a financial vehicle that will allow these resources to be put to work creating a sound sustainable, environmentally responsible future. SV: What do you think are our biggest tools to make this change to
more sustainable development?
BM: The biggest tool we have is education: to teach people how to
garden, to teach people how to market, to teach people how to set
up their own credit unions, to teach people how to set up their
businesses without capital—we do that. And you know, for the last
15 years of my life I’ve kind of been out of touch with the West
because I figure that America can do what it likes. It can find out how
to do something and it can put it into place. India’s not like that.
There are too many outcasts, too many marginalized people, so I go
there, and Africa and South America, and I prefer to teach where the
need is great. The changes are huge from my teaching.

I am a Board member of the PCU from Southern California. I am posting part of the Credit Union Pamphlet Question and Answer in  each SCPG Newsletter to help explain the workings of the Credit Union for the Permaculture Community. We are second year of Operations and have done the work to set up Loan Policies that reward ecological loans that reflect our Permaculture Ethics. I will explain more of the workings in Future Postings.
        As 3/31/02 we have 286 members, approximately, $1,400,000.00 shares/certificates and approximately. $1,449,000.00 in total assets. We need more members to help the Permaculture Credit Union grow to a size where it can offer more services to members outside New Mexico. We pool the financial resources of the people who believe in the ethics of Permaculture and strive to redirect those resources to Earth-friendly and socially responsible loans and investments.

The credit union promotes thrift among its members and provides credit at reasonable rates. It creates the opportunity for members to control the use of their money and contribute to the revitalization of their community and the planet.


Q. What is a Credit Union?

A. After successive years of bad weather during the mid-19^th century, European farmers needed a way to save their farms from foreclosure by urban banks. To do this they formed groups to pool their savings and lend to each other. The first credit union in the US was organized in 1909. However, it took a severe drought, the Great Depression, and the courage of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to stand up to the banks and create the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934.

Credit Unions continue to be a cooperative of individuals with a common bond who save their money and make loans. Credit Unions are member-owned, not-for-profit institutions. Banks are corporations operated for profit. Credit Unions are regulated by the chartering state and the Federal government and, as with banks, all deposits are Federally insured for up to $100,000.
