Indigenous cultures traditionally taught their children to understand
the natural world through mentoring, a time-honored teaching method that
emphasizes close relationships between teacher and student, communication
through reflective questioning, and spontaneous experience. Strategies
like storytelling, leading questions, and stage-setting draw out student
curiosity, encourage self-sufficiency, and invite deep understanding of
nature’s ways. Jon Young and Wilderness Awareness School have developed
comprehensive and authentic mentoring methods that combine a modern
life-sciences approach to environmental education with techniques used by
indigenous cultures.
Jon Young Biography Brief: Inspired by his childhood
mentoring with tracker and naturalist Tom Brown, Jr., Jon Young has
pioneered blending Native mentoring techniques from around the world with
the tools of modern field ecology. He has created an internationally
recognized system of naturalist, tracking, and awareness training that
has guided thousands of students to a deeper relationship with their
native environment on their journey to proficiency in the study of the
natural world. Jon Young is the founder and lead instructor for
Wilderness Awareness School.
