PRESS RELEASE
Sustainable Living
in Action at The Ojai Foundation
November 2000
For 20 years The Ojai Foundation has been both a champion
and a vigorous example of sustainable living. Its rustic retreat in
the mountains an hour north of Los Angeles is a living laboratory of
permaculture plantings, earth-friendly structures, council training, and
community outreach.
The architectural evolution reflects The Ojai Foundationšs
philosophy of stewardship, both for the 40 acres it occupies and for the
Earth at large. To this wooded, secluded collection of yurts,
domes, and gardens have come healers and spiritual leaders from many
cultures. Here they have shared their wisdom and have found common
ground and renewal amid the silence and beauty of nature. Along
with this has come a fertile education, now with many programs for youth
as well as adults, on how people from different backgrounds and cultures
might live respectfully with each other and their environment.
Stewardship of the Earth is a matter of the heart and
attitude as well as technology, and The Ojai Foundation has become a
center for exploring the practical as well as the spiritual side of this
mission. Numerous innovators in sustainable building design and
construction techniques have presented workshops in this supportive
setting. Over the next few months The Ojai Foundation will offer
three programs in this tradition:
--Building With Cob with Martin Hartman; Nov. 1-15, 1
to 5 p.m. daily: Hands-on experience constructing with cob building
materials. (Work exchange.)
--Earth Building with Jim Hallock and Stephen Gates;
Nov. 17-22, with evening presentation Nov. 17: Building with
pressed earth blocks. (Suggested donation $25 per day.)
--Permaculture with Penny Livingston-Stark and Brock
Dolman (Dec. 1-15): Intensive course in sustainable systems
design including permaculture solutions for watershed storage, site
planning and design, aqua culture, edible landscaping urban planning, and
much more. ($995.)
