June 4 Fri. Grains of the Planet slide show and talk by Lorenz Schaller,
International Grain Expert and Director of Kusa Seed Research Foundation, in
Ojai. Slide show 7:30 pm at CEC, $3 donation requested. Experience this
colorful slide presentation of humanity’s relationship with the sacred cereal
grasses such as barley, corn, millets, oats, rice, wheat, and other edible
seedcrops from around the world. Many of these seeds are remnants of vanishing
or disappearing heirloom crops. Kusa offers these seeds and information about
their culture and use as foods. The focus of Kusa is on production in “grain
gardens” and small-scale mini farms. Schaller has been growing rare and
ancient seeds in Ojai Valley for the past thirteen years. You can support his

Who should Attend?

This Workshop offers practical information useful to anyone interested in propagating cereal-grains (or grain-legumes) for food or ornament. Gardeners, mini-farmers, seedsavers, depth-psychologists (researching roots of myths, rituals, and celebratory cultural expressions) will find the Workshop interesting, with practical information for both beginner and the most experienced growers.

Content

Participants will prepare a seedbed, and then sow a number of different varieties of cereal-grains and grain-legumes. The focus will be on grain-growing for human food and the philosophy of genetic-diversity, featuring practical applications using bio-intensive and ecological techniques and methods. Simple, specialized equipment will be demonstrated and be available for all participants to use, handle, and learn about. Sketching and photographing is welcome. Participants will learn easy techniques for successfully producing human food grains, including how to pre-test seed for germination vitality before sowing; how to store seed to preserve life-force; seedbed preparation for grains; sowing; minimizing weed-pressure and weed competition; how to protect the young grain crop from birds and other predators; the degree of fertility necessary; how much to irrigate; irrigation methods/materials; what grains to plant, and much more.

Time Required

A two-hour block of time should be allowed for the Workshop 10 to 12 noon would be a good time-of-day. The Workshop will be open-dialogue, allowing ample time for questions and answers.

Site

The Workshop's plantings will take place at the CEC's garden 930 Miramonte Dr Santa Barbara CA, in specially prepared beds. These beds will be left in place for observation and visits from participants of the Workshop, to view the progress of the project over time.
